The Summer I Finally Slowed Down
How pressing pause became one of the best things I ever did for my nervous system.
As summer winds down and another school year approaches, I've found myself reflecting on the past few months.
This summer looked different.
Not because we traveled more or packed our calendar with activities.
It was different because... I intentionally slowed down.
And honestly?
It may have been one of the best things I've ever done for my nervous system.
Choosing Presence Over Productivity
One of the greatest blessings in my life is being able to stay home with my kids while they're still young.
These summers won't last forever.
There will come a day when they'll be too old for sprinkler afternoons, sidewalk chalk masterpieces, and asking me to build one more blanket fort.
So this year, I made a conscious decision to step back from work more than I normally would.
Not because I don't love what I do.
I truly do.
But because I realized I can always build my business.
I can't get this summer back.
Instead of feeling guilty for slowing down, I gave myself permission to fully be where my feet were.
And something unexpected happened.
My nervous system finally had room to breathe.
Healing Doesn't Always Look Like Another Supplement
As someone who has spent years learning about root-cause healing, I've come to appreciate something that often gets overlooked:
Sometimes healing isn't another supplement.
Sometimes it isn't another protocol.
Sometimes...
Healing looks like laughing with your kids.
Watching a sunset.
Going barefoot in the grass.
Reading a book in a hammock.
Sitting outside while your children catch bugs.
Letting your body remember what calm actually feels like.
Our nervous systems were never designed to live in a constant state of urgency.
Yet so many of us do.
Bringing Back the Kind of Summer I Remember
This summer reminded me so much of growing up in the '90s.
The kind of summers where no one was checking the clock.
We spent our days:
exploring new parks and trails
setting up slip-and-slides in the yard
eating popsicles outside
planting flowers
camping in our lenai
endless hours at the beach/pool
riding bikes around the neighborhood
reading books together
playing in the front yard until the sun started setting
There wasn't a perfectly planned itinerary.
There wasn't pressure to constantly entertain.
There was simply... childhood.
And honestly, I think I needed it just as much as my kids did.
Watching My Kids Grow in New Ways
One thing I loved most this summer was giving my kids more responsibility around the house.
Not because I needed extra help...
But because I wanted them to experience what it feels like to contribute.
They started taking on simple chores.
Helping with meals.
Cleaning up after themselves.
Taking ownership of little responsibilities.
Something beautiful happened.
Their confidence grew.
They became more independent.
They took pride in helping.
As parents, it's easy to do everything for our children.
But sometimes the greatest gift we can give them is believing they're capable.
Little by little, we're raising future leaders—not just kids who know how to complete chores.
Slowing Down Is Still Part of My Healing
People sometimes assume that because I now help others on their healing journey, mine is complete.
The truth is...
Healing isn't a finish line.
It's a relationship.
There are still seasons when I notice my nervous system becoming more overwhelmed.
There are still moments when fatigue or brain fog tries to creep back in.
The difference now is that I don't panic.
I pay attention.
I use bioenergetic scans to help me understand what my body may be asking for.
Sometimes it needs more nervous system support.
Sometimes more drainage.
Sometimes it simply needs me to slow down again.
The scans don't replace listening to my body—they help me listen more intentionally.
Preparing for a New School Year
As much as I've loved this slower season, I know life is about to shift again.
The backpacks will come out.
The routines will change.
Work will naturally become busier.
Instead of jumping from one extreme to another, I'm trying to transition intentionally.
One thing we're incorporating into our back-to-school rhythm is BrainTap.
My children and I have been using it to help support focus, reduce stress, and prepare our minds for the new routines ahead.
I'm looking at this new season not as something to survive—but as something to step into with more awareness.
Because I've learned that protecting my nervous system isn't just something I do when life is quiet.
It's something I have to prioritize when life gets busy, too.
If You Need Permission to Slow Down...
Maybe this is your reminder.
You don't have to earn rest.
You don't have to constantly prove your productivity.
You don't have to fill every empty space on your calendar.
Sometimes the most productive thing you can do for your health is slow down long enough to hear what your body has been trying to tell you.
For me, this summer wasn't about accomplishing more.
It was about becoming more present.
More grounded.
More connected.
To my children.
To myself.
And to the life I've been praying for all along.
As we step into a new school year, my hope isn't to hold onto summer exactly as it was.
It's to carry its pace with me.
To remember that my nervous system deserves the same care in August that it did in July.
Because healing isn't just found in the big moments.
Sometimes it's found in popsicles, backyard adventures, and choosing presence over pressure.
And maybe... that's exactly what my body needed all along.
